Hurricane force winds were present in Hammond
from approximately 11am - 2pm on Monday, August 29, 2005. During this time
Hammond had wind gust up to 100mph. Trees fell and blocked hundreds of
roadways which were cleared by National Guard Troops, parish and
city workers, and citizens of the parish. Although Katrina did
have a lot of rain, only low lying areas of Tangipahoa Parish suffered
flood damage, and the water quickly receded after the storm. Tangipahoa Parish
suffered 100% power outage for a period of 3 days. FEMA moved into the parish
after the storm and began to distribute water, ice, and food to the citizens
of the parish and surrounding areas. Most gas stations and grocery stores
were closed for a period of a week which made for very long waits
at the gas station and grocery stores that were open.
As
of September 14, 2005. Most of the parish has gone back
to work and life is getting back to normal. The electric company
says all but about 200 places in the parish have power which is remarkable
considering the condition of the utility lines after the storm.
The biggest inconvenience that citizens of the parish are experiencing
now is the influx of traffic. Many evacuees from New Orleans, Covington,
and Slidell have relocated to our parish and thousands of utility
workers and military personnel are also based in our parish due to
the close proximity and ease-of-access to the New Orleans area.
Extrema is experiencing difficulty with receiving and sending telephone
calls, which is most likely because of a long distance exchange located
in New Orleans. Other than that, it's business as usual at Extrema.
